Walter & Judy Brough
Walter began square dancing as a teenager, and subsequently enlisted in the United States Air Force where he met his future wife, Judy, at a Square Dance held at the Airman’s Club. Judy, an attractive, active square dancer also began dancing as a teenager and easily captured Walter’s affection. They later married and continued dancing until children, family and career responsibilities took priority and square dancing was suspended for several years. Empty nest syndrome and the need for a fun exercise rekindled the desire to return to dancing, so Walter and Judy reacquainted themselves with square dancing and Walter’s long time itch to be a Caller drove him to begin his calling career in mid-2007.
Being proactive regarding his improvement as a Caller/Teacher, Walter has attended three local Caller seminars and four, week-long Caller colleges in Fultondale, Alabama, Wichita, KS, Maggie Valley, NC, and Louisville, KY. Walter’s first seminar was a one day seminar taught by Wayne Nicholson who began his calling career in 1959 and has called and taught all over the world. Since that beginning, each year he has attended week long Caller Colleges/ Schools taught by acclaimed internationally recognized and accredited Caller coaches: Wade Driver, Jerry Jestin, Deborah Carroll-Jones, Jon Jones, Vernon Jones, Tony Oxendine, Ken Ritucci, and Jerry Story.
Walter is a full-time Caller for the Heardmont Squares club dancing at the Senior Center in Shelby County’s beautiful Heardmont Park. Walter holds “How Then Shall We Dance” weekly seminars for dancers to reinforce Callerlab definitions, styling, and counter dancing for mainstream and plus level dancers. The “How then Shall We Dance” seminars are designed to help new and experienced dancers reinforce and improve their skills, learn current styling, and counter dancing techniques. Additionally, he does community dance programs for churches and social organizations, and guest calls at national, state, and local dances. Walter has authored, published and presented several papers on Square Dancing.
L'Oreal USA — Walter was retained to develop, teach and call a team-building Square Dance Competition Program held at the Ross Bridge Resort and Convention Center.
"I am sending this note as a thank you to Walter Brough and Heardmont Squares for hosting an unforgettable night of dancing and fun during our recent gathering of L'Oreal USA Operations professionals in Birmingham, Alabama. Walter was an excellent square dance instructor and the support team that accompanied him allowed for our large group of 120 participants to be fully engaged and learn all of the basic moves in a very short amount of time. The spirit of team building thru shared learning and friendly competition provided a memorable experience that helped to form bonds that will last forever. I highly recommend Walter Brough and Heardmont Squares for any corporate or social event."
